5 minutes with… Karen
We catch up with Karen, Managing Partner, on why Massive Attack’s Unfinished Symphony best reflects her working day, and why she loves working in PR and Communications!
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I have always been passionate about communications. At first, I wanted to be a Lawyer as I could see the importance of words being used rightly and wrongly and the need to ensure language was never used as a power against the innocent. I then became interested in journalism and saw Public Relations as a career that would enable me to use communications to drive change.
Pick a song that best reflects your working day…
That’s a tough one, as no one day in communications is the same! But Massive Attack’s Unfinished Symphony resonates on several notes! Just as all our different brains and talent integrate at onebite for impact, the song brings together various musical elements including vocal and percussion samples, drum programming and string orchestration. The song wouldn’t be the same without this orchestra but not many people know that the group were forced to sell their car, a Mitsubishi Shogun, to fund it. Bringing to life how we should always strive for excellence whatever the cost.
The song’s history also shows the power of language to change behaviours. Being released in-the-midst of the Gulf War, the word “Attack” was temporarily dropped from the group’s name at the advice of their record company as it had previously been deemed “unpatriotic” by the BBC. So, it was issued under the temporary group name of “Massive” to prevent the single from being banned from airplay.
Finally, it’s inspiring and uplifting just like a day at our HQ. . .
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
I love walking the latest addition to our brood, Bella, a black cockapoo who me, my husband and children couldn’t love more. I also love to cook, especially on a Sunday – you can’t beat a Roast with the family.
